The answer, my friend
is not in a tempest whistling across tin roofs,
poppies that weep cut too soon,
the breakfast smile of a Carolina girl,
broken shells in the surf before a hurricane,
plaster of paris buddhas
the flip of a ace on Third Street and Main,
dusty tomes and ancient incantations,
frozen crevasses and pristine snow drifts,
pink flamingos
sin, salvation or the ordinary perfidy
that rests midway between the poles,
politicians, whores, preachers or carnie barkers,
a leaf turned precisely when predicted.

The answer, poet,
is found in none of these
or maybe all,
mangled metaphors and silly similes,

or the answer
may be green letters penned
on the back of a red tortoise
printed on a yellow balloon
tied to the arm of small boy

and in the boy’s laughter.
